Fire safety at Indian Point is a primary concern.

Forest management, conservation, and fire science consultants, who visited Indian Point in 2008, determined our woodlands to be fire resistant and noted the utility of our roads and trails as firebreaks and access points. With the relatively moist climate and absence of dry lightning in Maine, chances of lightning causing a wildfire are slim. Fire is more likely to start in your home and spread to common lands than vice-versa.

To maintain our status as a Firewise Community, IPA members must remain actively involved in fire prevention each year. Please participate in IPA fire prevention efforts — our safety depends upon you.

Fire Safety Plan

In 2009, the IPA members adopted an action plan for increasing fire safety at Indian Point. The Plan was amended in 2014 to allow homeowners to take fire safety actions in abutting common land.

Firewise Program

In 2009, with the concern and efforts put forth regarding fire safety at Indian Point, the Maine Forest Service (MFS) recommended Indian Point become a Firewise Community.

About the Firewise Community/USA Program

The Firewise Communities/USA program is "a multi-agency effort designed to reach beyond the fire service by involving homeowners, community leaders, planners, developers, and others in the effort to protect people, property, and natural resources from the risk of wildland fire — before a fire starts."
